Birthday Self-Portraits

This last Friday was mine and my NINE year old’s birthdays. Zanie came into my life nearly five years ago now and to our surprise we were both born on the same day. There is something special about a birthday buddy and I would not change it for the world! I must say though being a mother makes it hard already to enjoy “your” special days (birthdays and mother’s day) but sharing one of those days with your child makes it even harder.

Here’s just a bit of how my day went; I dropped Zane off at school, went to Costco and Target for birthday dinner supplies, made lunch for the littles, put them down for a nap, ventured to the mall to buy a birthday present for the boy who wants nothing, made 2 gluten/dairy free cakes, picked both big boys up from school, made said birthday dinner (with a little grilling help from my love), lit candles, sang happy birthday, opened presents, then jetted off to say farewell to cousin Kate who starts her College adventure this weekend! It may sound like I am complaining, but I am really not, this is what I have always wanted and I wouldn’t trade it for anything! Although some days I do crave a little bit of “me” time! (Or I dream of running to the border to spend the rest of my days sipping margaritas and listening to the gentle tide roll in! Haha!)

This year to get my “me” time I spent nap-time taking some self-portraits and having fun with lighting. I have been obsessed lately with some of the effects you can get using crystal prisms and copper pipes. I haven’t yet grabbed any of these supplies, but I wanted to experiment a bit so I went to the next best option and grabbed this from my closet:

I played around with wrapping it around the lens and arranging it so the blue crystals were slightly in the frame and then I just put the whole necklace inside the lens hood and held up my phone flashlight to it. Check my pictures out below!

All in all they were fun to take and edit, and I cannot wait to play around with prisms and light in the future! AND now I have some new pictures of me, which rarely happens!! One of the downsides of being a photographer. 🙂 You’ll have to let me know what you think!!
